John Leonard Sullivan

MARCH 6, 1944-APRIL 9,2025

John Leonard Sullivan (aka John L. or Sullie), was born in Toronto and raised in Noranda, Quebec. He died at home as he would have wished-quickly.  He is predeceased by his parents, James Bernard Sullivan and Alice Yvonne Sullivan and his brother-in-law, Robert (Bob) Lang.

Left to grieve are Mary Scharfe(partner), Colleen Sullivan(daughter), Adrian Willsher(son-in-law), Henry Willsher(grandson), Ian Sullivan(son), Catherine (daughter-in-law), Patricia Lang (sister), Elizabeth Sullivan (mother to his children) and Mary’s children Jamie and Maggie.

In addition to being a loving father and cherished partner to Mary, John had a brilliant mind, a wicked sense of humour, and was the greatest prankster. He would plan and plot his pranks against family and friends right down to the last detail. He had the best laugh. He had big opinions on all things political and social. He was a great marksman and had a prized gun collection. He was happiest at the camp on Lake Opasatica, Quebec, or in the bush hunting and fishing. He was a true “bushman”.  He never got lost in the bush, but give him a GPS in a city and he was lost for days. The only upside of my (his sister) writing this obituary is that I finally get the last word.

John Studied Forestry at UNB and started his career with The Ministry of Natural Resources in Elk Lake Ontario. He spent the majority of his career working for the Canadian Wildlife Service where he worked closely with his OPP colleagues across the province enforcing the Migratory Birds Act. His work also took him to the far north.

As per John’s wishes, cremation has occurred and there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, if people so choose, donations to Plant a Tree in Canada(alivingtribute.ca) would be appreciated

John Leonard Sullivan (alias John L. ou Sullie) est né à Toronto et a grandi à Noranda, Québec. Il est mort à la maison comme il l'aurait voulu : rapidement.  Il est précédé dans la mort par ses parents, James Bernard Sullivan et Alice Yvonne Sullivan et son beau-frère, Robert (Bob) Lang.

Il laisse dans le deuil Mary Scharfe (partenaire), Colleen Sullivan (fille), Adrian Willsher (gendre), Henry Willsher (petit-fils), Ian Sullivan (fils), Catherine (belle-fille), Patricia Lang (sœur), Elizabeth Sullivan (mère de ses enfants) et les enfants de Mary, Jamie et Maggie.

En plus d'être un père aimant et un partenaire chéri pour Mary. John avait un esprit brillant, un special sens de l'humour  et était le plus grand farceur. Il planifiait et complotait ses farces contre sa famille et ses amis jusque dans les moindres détails. Il avait le meilleur rire. Il avait de grandes opinions sur tout ce qui était politique et social. C'était un excellent tireur d'élite et il avait une précieuse collection d'armes à feu. Il était le plus heureux au camp du lac Opasatica, au Québec, ou dans la brousse à chasser et à pêcher. C'était un vrai « bushman ».  Il ne s'est jamais perdu dans la brousse, mais donnez-lui un GPS dans une ville et il était perdu pendant des jours. Le seul avantage du fait que ma sœur écrive cette nécrologie, c'est que j'ai finalement le dernier mot.

John a étudié la foresterie à l'UNB et a commencé sa carrière au ministère des Ressources naturelles à Elk Lake, en Ontario. Il a passé la majeure partie de sa carrière à travailler pour le Service canadien de la faune, où il a travaillé en étroite collaboration avec ses collègues de la Police provinciale de l'Ontario dans toute la province pour faire respecter la Loi sur les oiseaux migrateurs. Son travail l'a aussi mené dans le Grand Nord.

Selon les souhaits de John, la crémation a eu lieu et il n’y aura pas de service. Au lieu de fleurs, si les gens le souhaitent, des dons à Planter un arbre au Canada (alivingtribute.ca) seraient appréciés.
